Miata's are supposed to be extremely good on gas mileage. But my city has nothing but Ethanol mixed in with their gas bringing down my mileage from its original 21 city and 31 highway, down to 19 overall, including highway. Would it make any difference if I switched to a higher octane? Should it be 87 or 93?|||No. Your car isn't built to require them so you would just be spending more money on gas.|||There are dozens of different fuel blends sold in different states and different parts of the country. Nearly all cities in the USA use an ethanol blend for winter fuel. It's required by the Federal EPA and by the various state and local clean air agencies. Once they switch back to summer grade fuel, you should see a bit of an improvement.
Burning a higher grade fuel will not help your gas mileage or your engine's performance. All you will do is waste money.|||No, except you would pay more for the same mileage. Ethanol does affect overall mileage, and it's almost impossible to find in my state. The stations have banners announcing "100% Gasoline" now. They had the 10% mix for a while, and got too many complaints to continue using it.|||You need "87 or higher"!
If there is engine ping, move up a grade.
There is always the chance you need a new air filter.
Do not be so sure that it is the fuel that is causing the low MPG rating. You may have a cracked header that is resulting in the engine running lean. The last three Miata headers that I have checked out have had cracks in the welds. These were not very large, but the MPG was improved with a replacement.
Another thing that can come into play on MPG often over looked is that the plug wires do fail and sometimes cheap (non Platinum) plugs are installed. A cheap (non Platinum) plug is only good for about 12000 miles.
The last thing that comes to mind is oil in the spark plug wells. Sometimes enough oil gets in there to short out the system.
