I am getting ready to do this on a 90.
The web site instructions differ from the factory manual. (miata.net/garage/miatatop/index.html) where it is done with out removing the top.
Mazda factory manuals have you remove the top.
Special tools- drill (with 1/4 bits), channel locking type pliers (with non marring jaws).
Having done a 63 Falcon and 62 TR4's I hope to be able to do it. If you can afford to gamble the cost of a second top (worst case scenario) try it.
Or just take it to a shop and plan on paying about 200 to 500 US dollars in labor.Advise on changing a convertible top on 1991 Mazda Miata?
they are really not that hard to do . Ive done a few of them. i ordered one through jc Whitney and it came with instructions that were pretty good. don't take your old top off till you get the new one. some people will tell you wou have to stretch them but that's not true. when you close the top it stretches it for you. you may need some basic tools like a rivet gun or a staple gun to do it. matters on the model. take your time. good luckAdvise on changing a convertible top on 1991 Mazda Miata?
I have replaced several in my lifetime and have found that the time of year makes a difference on the toughness of the install. If the weather is cold it may be more of a problem than if the weather is warm/hot. I found laying the new material in the sun for a few hours made it go on a lot better.
Take it to a Mazda dealer, If they screw it up, they have to fix it!
