How hard is it to change out a window regulator on a 91 Mazda Miata?

Access is a bit difficult, but you do need patience and small hands. How hard is it to change out a window regulator on a 91 Mazda Miata?
No, it's quite easy...just messy due to the glue from the panel..sockets{mm} and screwdriver should be all you need...

Is the maintenance of a mazda miata expensive?

Im 17 and im currently looking for a first car and i was wondering if maintaining a miata was expensive and if they are a good first car to have or not?Is the maintenance of a mazda miata expensive?
I was in the exact same position as you a while back. I purchased my 95 Miata as my first car. I had driven other cars but they were not mine and I did not drive them everyday.

One thing you have to understand is that it is a light-weight rear wheel drive car. Meaning, if you get your tires wet and go through a corner to fast you will start to "fish-tail" and probably lose control of the vehicle. However, if you are aware of the nature of the vehicle you will have no problem. The first night I brought my miata home, I did that exact thing and have done a few times since. With that said, rear wheel drive is vastly superior to front wheel drive in so many ways. I won't get into that but you should research the differences.

Miatas are extremely reliable. If you keep up with your oil changes, belt changes (general maintenance) the car will easily last up to and likely beyond 200,000 miles. In all my time I have owned my miata, I have had only one issue, and that was a blown heater hose.

The cost to have a miata repaired is also quite cheap. The engine bay is very organized and everything is easily accessed. The parts are not as cheap as Honda Civic parts but they are still quite inexpensive.

The gas mileage is very good for a sports car too. On an average day, I will get about 25 mpg. I could get more if wasn't as aggressive with the throttle.

All in all, I have had a great experience with mine and appreciate the fine car that it is. Hope this helps and good luck!

  • Is it possible to replace my manual top cover on my 1995 Mazda Miata to a power automatic one?

anyone know?Is it possible to replace my manual top cover on my 1995 Mazda Miata to a power automatic one?
There is no kit in existence for this! If you think that there is a good market for them, why not engineer one for those who think they need one.

But don't expect me to put one on mine, it just means extra weight and as a result performance loss.Is it possible to replace my manual top cover on my 1995 Mazda Miata to a power automatic one?
Power tops aren't very popular for Miata's because it increases the one thing that makes the Miata great...it's low weight. The motor, wiring, switch assembly, etc that would be required would add probably at least 100lbs to the car, much of it being in the worst possible place...above the center of gravity. If you did it, it would be a 100% custom application, and unfortunately would cost probably as much as your 95 miata is worth to do.

Will a luggage rack on a Mazda Miata hold a snowboard?

I know they make luggage racks for Mazda Miatas, they go on the lid of the trunk. But can these racks old a snowboard or a pair of skis?

Snowboard should be fine, Skis you'd obviously have to be careful about length. Will a luggage rack on a Mazda Miata hold a snowboard?
Yes it will since snowboard it not that heavy.

You've popped a head gasket, and possibly cracked or warped the head. You'll probably find oil in the radiator, and coolant in your oil. Good luck.
I had a similar issue with my miata. First thing I would check are your hoses. Your car is over 20 years old and the hoses are going to worn. I would check the heater hose specifically because this is usually the first hose to go on the miata.

If the car got to hot you are going to want to replace the thermostat. I would say replace it anyways because it only cost about $20. You are probably ok though. It takes quite a bit damage the engine through overheating though.

Do you think a Mazda Miata is a good car?

I just want to know if this is a good functioning car. Is it good in gas mileage? Does it have any main issues that I should look out for? Things like that. It's going to be my first car and I want a car that is a 2 seater and is stick and that is cheap to take care of. So is this a good car for that?Do you think a Mazda Miata is a good car?
Mazda Miatas are great cars and I've owned several. They are very hearty and have been known to last over 250,000 with proper maintenance. The engine the miata uses take forced induction very well. They are popular on many track circuits as well. Here is the breakdown.

First Generation: (by far the easiest to modify)

    90-93: 1.6l engine

94-95: 1.8l engine, Mazda beefed up the engine so expect to get about 10-15 more horsepower out of these cars. They were still OBDI and didn't fall under the same emissions controls.

96-97: Mazda again beefed up the engine but not by much. The car has OBDII and some extra components for the new emissions controls.

    Second Generation:

99-00: Mazda completely changed the body and did away with the pop-up headlights. Still uses a 1.8l engine but ran about 10 more horsepower than the first generation.

01-05 Mazda beefed up the cars look and made the 1.8l more powerful but not by much. Also Mazda introduced 01-05 Mazdaspeed models which included a turbocharger.

    Third Generation

06-09: Mazda introduced a brand new 2.0l engine and produced about 20 more horsepower than the second generation miata. Although they are faster, many complain that it doesn't handle as well as the first generation.
cool cars im a mechanic and ive not heard of any known problemsDo you think a Mazda Miata is a good car?
yeah depends what year. first gens have a 1.6 i think. and second gens have the 1.8. so theyre really good on gas mileage. really light car so yeah. 28 MPG and the next 32 MPG around there. good car for a girl or small man. in my opinion
The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a great car to own. It's an enthusiast car because it has great handling, balance, and enough power to move along. The Miata doesn't have any kinks to look out for and should be fairly cheep to maintain. The Miata is also great on gas, achieving 21-22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway according to the EPA. Based on what you're looking for it seems the Mazda will fit your bill.Do you think a Mazda Miata is a good car?
Be sure to check frame and undercarriage for presence of rust!!!!

How do i make my miata more masculine?

It was a gift from my parents, and i didn't want to tell them it was a girly car...Are there any mods i can make to have it look less barbie-esque?How do i make my miata more masculine?
dude, just tell your parents that it was sweet, and then flip it (make sure you're wearing a seatbelt) then when the insurance money comes, you can buy a cadillac...
That's easy, stud...tie a dead deer to the hood. How do i make my miata more masculine?
    GET A LIFE!

This type of attitude is just the reason I love my 90 Miata.

I love making you little boys eat my dust in your macho machines.

I hope you get that macho ride you wish for so that all your girl friends know that you are controlled by what lives in your short hairs. It saves us girls a lot of time, we will know you are a wannabe when you get that "masculine" ride. We will play you like a top and drop you like a rock, just to see you cry.
    Wow. Just wow.

Free car, and its not good enough. For shame!

It is NOT a girly car, you will realize this when you grow up a little.

Mods, lower it, new rims and lower profile tires. Cat back exhaust, add some paint (ghost flames, striping, whatever).

Autocross it. No girly car (whatever the hell that means) can handle an autocross the way this nimble little machine can.

Be very grateful your parents have given you such a wonderful gift, most kids dont even get help with insurance. How do i make my miata more masculine?
Get a new paint job with a Transformers motif. Definitely won't look Barbie-esque then.
    Be confident in your sexuality;

    like the transformers idea...

    and the transvestite one

But, to be honest, I don't know-try ALL of the mods the others listed...or total it and get another.
Get some really mean mud flaps - yeah!
Autocross it!!!! If you are aggressive enough you might accomplish the flip someone mentioned earlier.

If you are too tall for it and you are staring at the top of the windshield, take some of the foam out of the seat.
there idiots go to monster miata.com if you get that motor but it in its rated in the top 10 fastest cars in the world
Get a wide body kit, or just some pumped fenders. Wide wheel wells always look hot. Also, deep dish (negative offset) wheels will give you a very "bling bling" look.
it's not the car, it's the driver.
Some people just will not realize what they have till it is gone.

Like the girl that wanted a vett, instead of an SHO, because the SHO was not a "sports car", never mind that the SHO is twice the car that a vett is on a road course, not to bad on the freeway either. I owned one, and the Vetts learned to leave it alone.

As for the Miata, I do hope you can get rid of it, because if you feel you have got to flaunt it, you ain't got it.

In short no matter what you drive your attitude shows you are a girlie bou.

The most radical redesign kit for a Miata is here:

    http://www.flyinmiata.com/westfield/
check out skyjacker for a lift kit and start dipping so when you spit out the winder yous can gets ya some uh them redneck racin stripes!
Strap it to the hood of your pick up truck and use it as a hood ornament,,thats probably the only way.
Gee, what a problem you have. Mommy and Daddy bought you your first car instead of making you have to get your first car in high school by having a part time job and maintaining your grades or just having graduated college and getting your first car after your first couple of months of a steady job. The horror, it was probably brand new as well.

Why not enjoy the fact your folks got you a car in the first place. Why not be gratefull for what you have, instead of being ungratefull and acting almost like a spoiled child.

Lastly, if you feel like such a girl in this car, give it back to Mommy and Daddy and tell them point blank it is too girly and you need to have them spend even more of their hard earned money modify it, because you can not be gratefull for all of what they did do for you. Cause guess what, no matter how much money they spend on this car and you...you are one of those folks who is never gonna be happy.
Dual exhaust pointed straight up, brush guard on the front, and a grill mounted wench.
Your question isn't valid. It's not a barbie car. In your case it's a real sports car being driven by a barbie driver (you). ...or you have some kind of hidden agenda you're not capable of being honest about.

Some day after you grow up you'll understand this. In the meantime, you're just another moron trying to stir up trouble.
Are you sure you want to date women?

It's okay to be the fem in the couple.
    Become a transvestite. Problem solved.
LOL..sorry. Miatas are uber-feminine. Sell it. Buy a Jeep.

Where is the gas tank in a Mazda Miata?

    If it's god's car, yes.
    ...yes...you did it right....
Yup. Miatas are just big sponges, really.
That's what we get for talking about Ahura Mazda...
It's on the left side right on top of the part next to the trunk. I'm answering this seriously because I actually know the answer.
    1. Pull down pants.

    2. Insert pump.

    3. Pump gas.

    4. ????

    5. Profit!
    oh yeah
Don't light it dude. Those cars don't have gas tanks. It runs on blubber. I read about it. The Japanese are killing all the whales. Mazda means whale oil in Spanish. Hope this helps.
what does this have to do with religion?
Mazda Miata was designed without a Fuel Tank, which you have known by now.

What you need to do is, you have to empty the water from the Radiator and pour the gas on it, it has separate outlet and special hoses going to the Combustion Chamber.

What actually others do rather, is to pour gas on the engine, when it mixed with oil, it would contribute to a faster combustion, giving more acceleration to the Car.

Hope this helps.... a serious advice to a serious question.
The car will be fine, but you are going to burn in hell for all eternity for what you have done.

  • When can I put the top down on my new MIATA?

So far it has been nothing but snow here.....and i can hardly wait to put the top down on my new car and go topless in the sun! Will I like it? Any advice from other Miata owners? When can I put the top down on my new MIATA?
There is a reason we have kept our Miata for so long, having the top down is great therapy. It reminds one that life is worth living. You may not understand that near as well as we do. It is part of what has helped my wife deal with cancer and its treatments.

Putting the top down and driving mountain roads takes away pain that no pain killer can touch.

If it does that much for her, how much more can it do for some one who is healthy!

Who says you have to wait for the snow to clear? Bundle up and go for a slow ride!

So far we have been caught is rainstorms (not showers), tornado and even snow fall with the top down. Now the snow was planed the other were with out much if any warning. Every one of those events was fun in its own special way. Yes we get looks, but life is about living and not about what others may think! When can I put the top down on my new MIATA?
When can you put your top down? Well that's up to the weather... Will you like it? That's up to you, but most people do. Advice? Don't put the top down while you're driving! The whole roof can rip apart from the car. When can I put the top down on my new MIATA?
Put it down right now. Cold? Crank up the heat.

When is the BEST time to put the top down? In the fall, at night, driving through a 2-lane mountain road, with the Stones' "Gimme Shelter" cranking.

How much does it cost to replace a clutch in a 94 Miata?

It be manual. Parts + Labor. How much does it cost to replace a clutch in a 94 Miata?
Labor is the hard one to figure. It is a four hour job (some shops may use a different number). So what ever the shop rate is times four.
Parts are a little easier a basic clutch kit is about 300 dollars at most retail outlets. You can get a unknown quality light weight flywheel and clutch kit for about 350 dollars on up. The "Happy Meal" from Flying Miata costs 599 dollars.
Now the reasons for going with a set up like the Happy Meal is that the light weight flywheel is to free up horse power for acceleration and to save the mechanic time on installation. If the flywheel needs to be resurfaced it adds time to the bill and if it can not be waiting for one keeps the car off of the road. Some shops will let you provide your own parts, so if you elect to buy your own parts find a shop that will work with you on this.
I had the "cheap" e-bay clutch installed in one of my Miata's three years ago and it worked fine. It was a bit cheaper back then. With labor my total bill was about 600 dollars. Which may sound steep to some, however that is no more then what a set of new wheels and tires would cost. So for me it was a good investment.
One other thing, I also had the rear seal replaced at the same time. I did not want to have to invest all that money in labor and not get something fixed while it was apart that might need done.

Mazda Miata "M" edition, what the difference between M and regular edition?

I'm considering buying a Mazda Miata "M" edition.

    What's so special about it?

What makes this different than a stock Mazda?

ThanksMazda Miata "M" edition, what the difference between M and regular edition?
The M edition had different colored embroidery on the seats, a few other interior accents, paint available only on the M-editions, and pretty much every option available at the time (including the Torsen LSD).

And they were stock. They were different from the BASE Miata.

How do you feel about ls1 miata?

Hey. I was thinking about getting a cheap little mx5 and swapping an ls1 into it. Fast? Also, what other mods would be useful for stability and reliability? How do you feel about ls1 miata?
The one person that I know of that did this swap was not happy with the results.

Yes it had plenty of power, and was fast, but it just was too easy to cross the knifes edge on handling. Meaning that in a turn it went from under-control to out of control with little or no warning.

Thankfully he did not eat any trees in the process.

I don't know that there is a way to correct for this, he traded his off to get another stock Miata to supercharge. Something he found more to his liking in the handling department. How do you feel about ls1 miata?
Ls1 miatas are great! GM's LS V8s are one of the best in the world. That would make the miata seriously fast! 300hp into a half ton car.

Just to let you know its really expensive to put an ls1 into the miata. You need to change the diff and tranny too.

Get some adjustable coilovers for it. And the car is already reliable as is so no worries there.

Oh and if you ever find the ls1 too expensive, go with the ROTREX kit, its INSANE.How do you feel about ls1 miata?
A LS1 powered Miata would be seriously fun and fast, though obviously the conversion would not be very cheap. Flyin Miata offers a kit which would greatly simplify the process.

As an alternative, keep in mind that the stock engine can reliably make a respectable amount of power when turbocharged or supercharged.

Where could i find a used top for a 1995 Mazda Miata in Ohio?

i just bought the car and i have been looking everywhere for a top. I don't car if it's cracked or anything because i can work fiberglass. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Where could i find a used top for a 1995 Mazda Miata in Ohio?
If you are looking for a hard top to bolt on, these are scarce! If you are any good with fiberglass you might be able to fab on using a spare header off of a drop to. Also they are not cheap, when I find one (most often on e-bay) the price with shipping ends up costing almost as much as one from the dealer.

For a replacement rag top, I just order them off of e-bay and install them myself (I use the three window ones on mine).

But there is the slim chance that if you used http://car-part.com/ and called salvage yards that have other parts for a Miata you might find one.

FYI, I have been thinking about mounting up a roll bar and installing this:

    http://www.gomiata.com/auminaonepif.html

Cost wise, it is almost as cheap as a factory hardtop. It would look nice on my winter Miata that I seldom put the top down on.

  • How do i make my miata more masculine?

    Be confident in your sexuality;

    like the transformers idea...

    and the transvestite one

I couldn't find it, so I poured gas into the trunk. Is this bad? Will the trunk absorb the gas and put it into the tank?Where is the gas tank in a Mazda Miata?
    Pineapple.
Yeah something like that...Where is the gas tank in a Mazda Miata?
    lololol
You're fine as long as you light the gas on fire before you start driving.Where is the gas tank in a Mazda Miata?
Spiritually speaking, it's on the right. If not, left

When can I put the top down on my new MIATA?

  • Do you think a Mazda miata is a sports car?

The brother thinks there are no sports cars under $50,000. I said "How about the older miata, it was in the top sports cars of the decade in the 90's." He said "Nope, a miata isn't a sports car."Do you think a Mazda miata is a sports car?
Lots of cars are "sporty" cars, but the Miata is truly a sports car. The handling is superior to many $50,000+ cars out there.

Regarding the height "issue," a 6'4" basketball player at my college owned a Miata and he said he had no problems getting in and out. And there is a ton of legroom inside.

The Miata isn't just sporty, it's a true sports car. Drive a Miata. Take it on a mountain road. Test the handling. Then tell me it isn't a sports car. Your comments regarding performance lead me to believe that you've never driven one.
I'd consider it a sports car, but I'm a girl so he wouldn't think my opinion would count ;PDo you think a Mazda miata is a sports car?
He is correct, the Miata isn't a sports car. However, a sports car convertible that is under $50,000 is a Honda S2000. Look up the stats - it is very impressive.
There are many sports cars under 50 grand. Miata, Honda S-2000, BMW. I used to own Fiat 850 spyders and even though they would only do 100 mph, they were still sports cars. Now, if you want to get into labels like "sports racer" or "exotic" then you get into bucks.Do you think a Mazda miata is a sports car?
who gives a $hit what his definition of a "sports car" is?
Of course it is. Your brother (and anyone else who says it's not) don't get it: a sports car is a car that puts driving fun over everything else. That doesn't mean they can't have some practicality, but they have to be fun - not always really fast, but still fun.

There have been many sports cars over the years that haven't been fast: Fiat X1/9, 850, and 124 Spider, Alfa spyder, almost any of the old British sports cars.

So - 2 seats usually, great handling, decent performance, not usually loaded with bells and whistles.

Current cars I would consider sports cars under 50K: MX5, Sky, Solstice, S2000, 350Z, base Corvette - and the best sub 50K car is a Lotus Elise. The reason I would say the Elise (and it's sister Exige) is a better sports car than a Corvette (they have about the same base price) is it's the purest sports car - no automatic, no power steering (the only car in the US without it) - it's just you and the car and the road. That said, the Corvette is of course faster and more practical, but the Elise is more fun.

    My 2 cents!

EDIT - good response from "the brother", but on mine, you missed the point - I did not say that every fun car is a sports car, I said that a sports car was designed to be fun as the top priority. A Tercel, no matter how much modified, was not designed to be fun, it was designed to be practical, basic transportation. Part of being fun is looking the part - which all my examples do - and a Tercel does not. I'll also add one thing - a real sports car MUST have rear wheel drive. I left that out above, but you will notice that none of the cars I referred to are anything but.

At 6 feet tall, you would easily fit in an MX5, by the way, I'm 6'2 and have tested it out.

Fun debate no matter what anyone's conclusions are!

EDIT AGAIN - bro, you seem to just pick out small things and focus on them and once again miss the point. I did not say that RWD makes it a sports car, it said it's one "must have" for a sports car - no car designed from the ground up to be a sports car has FWD. The Audi TT is a good example (base model is FWD as it's based on the Golf/Rabbit) - despite having two seats (in convertible form) and being fairly fast, I don't consider it a sports car.

Last time - in my view - a sports car is a car that was designed from the very start to be fun in every way. Not always the fastest, but fun. Fun to look at, fun to drive, fun to own. Just because it can be out run by a luxury sedan doesn't make it less of a sports car. How many sports cars (by your definition) would get smoked by an M5 (a luxury sedan for sure)? A Boxster would get killed by an M5, but does that make it less of a sports car? Which would you rather drive when the sun is shining, the day is warm, and you have a winding country road in front of you? That's what I'm talking about, but clearly you don't get it.

By your definition an M5 or a C63 AMG are more of a sports car than a Boxter because it's faster, but I couldn't disagree more. Better daily driver maybe, better on the highway for sure, but not as much fun on that winding road.
    Hi I’m his brother,

I will try to respond to this question with as much reason as possible. First, lets look at what the question should actually say and where this question was really derived from.

My friend tells me that he’s getting $50,000 CAN. Then he asks me (because I have fair knowledge of cars), what sports car can I get under that amount, BRAND NEW!!! I said he would be able to get a sport car under that amount but not brand new. This is true!

I, myself am 6"0 and don't what to be squeezed into a small soap box car. Therefore that eliminates all cars such as Saturn Sky's, MAZDA MIATA's and Pontiac Solstice's. Remember I don't what my knee's to be sticking up over the steering wheel and obstructing my view (Exaggerating (a little)). It's dangerous and uncomfortable.

Now with that said I will respond to each comment already given:

Mel: I do think your opinion counts but when I look at people driving Mazda Miata's or even in-vision it there a girl in the drivers seat (it’s a girly car). (Not being sexist)

remowlms: Thanks someone who agrees. But remember my friend is 18 years old and still has to pay insurance for it.

Ray K: Remember brand new and I thought that sports cars could do like 220 km/h easy.

dan7532: dude whatever. Why did u even say anything? You can just guess what we don't give a $hit about.

PMack: OK, I’m 18, my father has a Toyota Tercel. He has an aftermarket exhaust manifold and exhaust system. The car is light, quick and handles well if you knows its limits. Is a stick shift and fun to drive. I’m not the only person who has said this. Lets just say that it being fun to drive and all that doesn't make it a sports car. My father Toyota Tercel is not a sports car. And yes I have heard of the Corvette and Elise but my friend and I are 18 and after buying a car like that he won't have much money left over for insurance, which might be over $4500 a year.

Dave C: Yes the Miata is "sporty" and under $50,000 but remember getting in should not be a stunt performance.

Overall with that said the Mazda Miata is not a sports car "in my eyes". A sports car is something that’s main objective is performance.

    EDIT:

PMack: Just because it rear wheel drive does not make it a sport car. Yes I would say it’s a “sporty” car but it doesn’t meet my standards for a sports car. Another example of a “sporty” car would be Toyota Celica; it has a 1.8L just like the new MX-5.

PMack and Dave C: About the height “issue”. In my opinion a sports car should not make someone look like a clown riding a tiny bike. My dad is 6”2 and probably around 250 Lbs and he would look like a freak driving around in a MX-5 with the top down; Dave C I don’t know how the basketball player you know gets away with it. My dad and this guy would look a lot better in Corvette, Viper or Porsche.

Dave C: I’m sure it does feel good and no I’ve never driven one but a Mazda Miata is just a small “sporty” car that is almost scratching the line between sports car and not sports car. In my opinion it’s just a wanna-be sports car. The only reason why you might think it is, is because it’s small and light. It doesn’t even have over 200 horsepower. I’m sure there’s a luxury car out there that can out perform it (remember their objective).

I don’t think this debate is fun! It’s 5 against me and remowlms (and he is only half on my side). Joking this is fun. I like arguing and think I’m good at it. LOL

    KEEP IT COMING

    EDIT EDIT:

PMack: I understand what you’re saying but to give the Mazda Miata the glorification of being called a sports car is wrong in my opinion. It’s a “sporty” car for the last time, just like a Toyota Celica or a Nissan 240SX. I just don’t think that the Miata can cut it that’s all. Plus I’m probably arguing with the wrong people here, your all probably Miata fans and own one.
sports car is a generous label for a miata

What is a fair price for replacing the timing belt and a 60 k mile service on a 2002 Mazda Miata?

Dealership quotes $850 and I was told that was ridiculous. I don't know where else to go, though. Help is appreciatedWhat is a fair price for replacing the timing belt and a 60 k mile service on a 2002 Mazda Miata?
$150 plus all parts involved. Be sure to use only genuine mazda parts and coolant!!!
Dealer service rates are usually the high water mark.

That said, on most cars you have to take off a lot of junk to get at it, then put it all back together (correctly......).What is a fair price for replacing the timing belt and a 60 k mile service on a 2002 Mazda Miata?
I don't know where they are getting their prices from at dealership this days. Since the belt should not take more than 3 hours to do by an amateur. Is not like in the olden days where the pulleys need to come out, most movement is mechanical and can simply slide the belt out on 100% of the vehicles that have belts. That is why you buy either a HONDA, TOYOTA, MITSUBISHI with belts because the Dealerships never overprice their replacement I have yet to see either one of these charge more than $500 for changing a belt that is including taxes and a premium wash Canadian too and when the dollar was lower than the US. Also I forgot to mention it includes the water pump as well something that should be changed when the timing belt is changed.
yeah, thats high, but thats the dealership for you...the belt itself costs about $40.00....its the labor thats the problem...they are probably charging you 7 hours at $100.00 a hour....ask a friend to refer a local shop and have them do it....What is a fair price for replacing the timing belt and a 60 k mile service on a 2002 Mazda Miata?
At least 4 hours shop rate and parts.

I haven't seen the flat rate books on this job, but it takes me six and I don't think I can beat the quoted hours in that book on any job.

There may be a non-Mazda shop in your area that is a one or two man operation that can do it for less. Some of these "Ma and Pa" operations are the best you will ever find (then again they can be the worst). But make sure that they know Miata's.

I used Olstens in Lincoln Ne, when I had a shop do my Miata some years back (It cost me 350). True I did not get the car back the same day, but I thought the price savings was worth it.

Would you trust a miata soft top that was bought from ebay?

There so inexpensive but I wanted to get another opinion. I live in SF and the softtops on Ebay and Amazon were $300 or less. Someone quoted me $1000 for the top and installation. But I want to buy my own top and then let him install.

Anyone buy the soft top from ebay or amazon before?Would you trust a miata soft top that was bought from ebay?
I have bought two soft tops for my Miata's off of e-bay (three window version's). They both came from the same vendor. I installed them myself.
So let me give you a two hints-
    1. Get the cables.
    2. Buy a new rain rail (some of the tops have these already attached).
I have read the Factory manual on how to replace a top, Haynes, the ones at
http://www.miata.net/, and the ones with the top/s. They all helped, but neither car had the factory tops and who ever put them back together did not do the job right.
So while I can not vouch for all the tops you will find on e-bay, the ones I bought were good.
If you have some time, a drill motor, pair of water pump pliers, pop rivet gun, a few sockets and the time you might want to do the job yourself.
Actually the top is small and single layer on a Miata, so about $300 it correct.

But installation is not that easy.

There may be sewing involved to attach to the end and the frames.

It also usually have to be stretched in some places and shrunk in other, with steamers.

It will still cost $500 for installation unless you think you can do it yourself?

You might be able to, but I would read up.Would you trust a miata soft top that was bought from ebay?
I would go look into the Miata you want a bit more, and you should ask the owner if you can go for a quick drive to check it out.If you think about a bit more, I suggest you go to a car cleaning place to make sure the old owner didn't leave any disgusting things behind.Your choice.
eBay isn't the issue. It's the soft top. Look into the quality and such and then decide based on the top, not eBay.

"Go with Old Man Dirt on this one." - I second this.Would you trust a miata soft top that was bought from ebay?
    I wouldn't trust a miata. Period.
I would go with Old Man Dirt on this one.

Can the clutch on a 1999 Mazda Miata be adjusted?

I've notice receintly that the clutch on my car needs to be depressed all the way to the floor before it engages. It hasn't alway been like this. It use to engage before reaching the floor. It works fine otherwise. Is this something that can be adjusted? If so, is it something that can be done by an amateur? Can the clutch on a 1999 Mazda Miata be adjusted?
It is probably the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder. Check the fluid level in your clutch master cylinder, it is probably low. One or the other is probably either leaking, or the fluid is going past the seals back into the reservoir. Can the clutch on a 1999 Mazda Miata be adjusted?
Yes, you should be able to adjust the clutch travel. Look under your dash at the clutch pedal itself. You will see two bolts behind the pedal area. One is a lock nut, the other is the adjustment. Loosen the lock nut and adjust the pedal. Start the car and see how it engages. If it is the travel is too short, move the adjustment nut again until it is satisfactory to the travel you want. When you are happy, tighten the lock nut back. To gauge the clutch pedal distance, start the car and engage a gear....remove the pedal slowly to see where it engages the flywheel and begins to move the vehicle..Can the clutch on a 1999 Mazda Miata be adjusted?
you cant adjust the clutch, the guy above was talking about adjust the pedal but that will only make you can push more the slave down but adjusting the clutch

the only way is changing the clutch for a new one
No. Need to replace clutch cynlinder pretty soon or no changing of gears.

How do I connect my ipod to my Miata mx5?

theres no play to connect an auxilary chord..so what do I do?

I don't want to go all out and by a radio transmitter thing for my ipod..

and what is the "media" button suppossed to do?

I need help with this! How do I connect my ipod to my Miata mx5?
    I replaced my radio.

But my Miata/s are 1990 models and an ipod was unheard of then. A cassette drive was the latest in dash unit then.

As for what the Media button does, read the directions! I think it just puts you over to the CD player and switches between AM, FM tuners. How do I connect my ipod to my Miata mx5?
I did the same thing Old Man Dirt did (a fellow 1990 owner) - replaced the radio.

But the little FM transmitter thing is an inexpensive solution.

  • Can I make my gear ratio longer on my miata?

    1991 Madza Miata 4cyl 1.6 RWD

I'm tired of doing 70mph at rev of 3800 or so, I know it has to do with the differential. Is there a forum or a shop in southern California that can help me with this mod?Can I make my gear ratio longer on my miata?
First off, these motors are fine doing those rpms for an extended amount of time. Since you are driving the 91 odds are it has the 4.30 gear. What a lot of us have done is purchase the rear end out of a later model NB. The 4.10 is not much of a change but the 3.90 torsen it is a good swap for what you are looking for. To do the swap you will need the entire rear end pumpkin (easiest method), halfshafts, and drive shaft from the NB model car. You could go as far as the 3.63 gears, but for the 1.6l you will be having a lot of issues starting with such a tall gear. Highway speed will be great and much lower rpm, but taking off from a dead stop will be tougher. I have done the 3.90 torsen swap from a 99 and I really enjoy the difference. At 80 mph I am cruising about 3750 rpm...at 70 mph I am around 3250.Can I make my gear ratio longer on my miata?
The problem you are going to run into is torque. those little motors aren't designed to have that much torque, you will be putting undue stress on your engine.

How do I clean the top to my 2001 mazda miata convertible?

I have a 2001 Mazda Miata Convertible with a canvas top. I would like to clean it...how do I do that? Is there special products out there to use for it or are there certain products to avoid? ThanksHow do I clean the top to my 2001 mazda miata convertible?
there are specific cleaning products sold in major auto supply houses but regular mild detergent and water work well

What is better for my mazda miata a turbocharger or a supercharger?

it is a 1993 1.6L engine and i want a lot of power without hurting the engine...what is better, and what other mods could i make that would be really good and mostly cheapWhat is better for my mazda miata a turbocharger or a supercharger?
The 1.8 is better for putting out power, but the 1.6 can still do the job. You can double the horsepower with an Fyin Miata kit and some dyno hours. A Jackson Racing supercharger is an awesome option that is easy to drive on the street. The little B16 engine can handle a decent amount of boost on stock internals, so if all out power is what you want then build a decent turbo setup, with an intercooler and 3" mandrel bent exhaust. Hope this makes the decision easier and good luck.
A Monster Miata can be built for just about the same price as the Jackson Super Charger, and maybe even the Flying Miata turbo set up.

So it you want only speed, think about that route.

As for me, I don't want to upset the balance that the Miata already has built in. So I go turbo.

You can install a turbo for less then the Flying Miata, but you had better do some research first. It takes more then a bolt on header, turbo charger and exhaust to make a turbo system work right. What is better for my mazda miata a turbocharger or a supercharger?
turbo is really nice, add a front mount intercooler and intake.. then a turbo back exhaust... mmmmm SEXY.. also look into the Miata clubs.. also, see what engine mods you would need, can a stock motor take the sudden increase in power? might have to add/replace crucial internals before doing that.. dont want a 6000 (+/- a few HP) hp miata with a blown motor
Turbo Kits are better, but for an older engine, a supercharger is better.

Turbochargers are recommended for cars with less than 60,000 miles. What is better for my mazda miata a turbocharger or a supercharger?
yeah definitely a turbo charger , i would think a supercharger on that size engine might draw alot of power compared to what youd gain ....
turbo- because a super charger is belt driven and you might not have the room.
id go with a turbo and an after cooler. and dont forget the blowoff valve... good luck

Where do I install a performance chip on the ECU for a 1990 Mazda Miata?

I have a 1990 Mazda Miata and i want to install a performance chip in it but i don't know where to attach the 2 wires from the chip to the ecu, can someone please be specific and explain to me how to put it in, ThanksWhere do I install a performance chip on the ECU for a 1990 Mazda Miata?
Those 2 wire chips do not work. All they do is make your cars fuel injection run rich by changing the readings the computer receives. So it ruins you gas mileage. No matter what you was told by who ever sold it to you. They are junk and that chip you gave big money for can be bought at Radio Shack for less than a dollar. Don't waste your time and send it back if they allow it.........mdWhere do I install a performance chip on the ECU for a 1990 Mazda Miata?
Send it back . Its just a resistor. Not going to make your car run any better then it does when you first start it. If you want to do some homework... Learn about OBD 1 fuel injection.

  • How do you change a 80A fuse on a 2000 miata?

i am a girl so i know nothing about working on my car. I know however that the 80A fuse is bad and i need to replace it. I know its under the hood and in the little fuse box. but how do i actually replace it??? is it bolted in? do i need to unhook the battery? How do i go about fixing my problem? How do you change a 80A fuse on a 2000 miata?
Before you go any further WHY did an 80A fuse blow?

If it was something you did such as jump starting the car the wrong way then there's a good chance you may have some other components that are damaged. Get it looked at professionally so it doesn't start a fire or leave you stranded somewhere.

If you don't know why it blew, then don't touch it as it would just blow again to protect your car.

Otherwise, the 80A fuse is a large one, it is screwed in, and yes the battery should be disconnected when it is replaced AFTER the cause of the blow has been solved. How do you change a 80A fuse on a 2000 miata?
You have no guy friends to help ya?? You need to look at the back of the lid to the fuse box. Trace down what fuse it is. It'll say 80A if it's an 80A fuse. Anyways look and see if it's got screws holding it in. If it's 80Amps it may possibly be a bigger fuse. If not then take some needle nose pliers and pull it out and replace it. No need to disconnect battery. How do you change a 80A fuse on a 2000 miata?
you gotta find out what the fuse blew, it probably touching metal somewhere, the 80A fuse are the special type of fuse, they aint cheap and can only get at specific locations, if you dont find out why the fuse has fry, it gonna keep on happening again and again, gotta find the source that trigger

    they aint normal ATC Fuse

I have a 1990 Mazda Miata and the odometer that tells the speed and the milage on it is not functioning?

I do not know if this is a fuse you have to change or if some kind of wiring that doesnt work. Your help is greatly appreciated.I have a 1990 Mazda Miata and the odometer that tells the speed and the milage on it is not functioning?
The speed gage and odometer are partially linked. The fact your speed gage is working means your odomenter is bust. That means between the gear system on the axle to the gear system on the gage there is a busted gear. It is all set on timing and given yours is a 90 it is based on mechanical timing and not computer computations. Take your Miata into a certified Mazda CSE tech and get it fixed.I have a 1990 Mazda Miata and the odometer that tells the speed and the milage on it is not functioning?
the speedometer cable is divided in like 3 parts ones goes to cluster to firewall the other ones to near the trans and there is the last part of the cable that you have to replace

most proteges and miata speedometer cable brokes last section of cable so replace it by yourself is very easy instalation

your cluster is mechanical not electrical for that year of your carI have a 1990 Mazda Miata and the odometer that tells the speed and the milage on it is not functioning?
Miatas use a cable from the tail shaft housing of the transmission to the speedometer. The usual problem is a broken cable. Remove the cable end at the transmission. Pull the cable out. It will probable be broken near the transmission because there is a sharp bend there.
A Protege I used to have did the same thing. Found out it was the speedometer cable. It shouldn't cost you more than $150 to have a shop replace it- and even that's a little high.

I have a 19 year old Miata and I really needed to get the metal protected.

I took it to Maaco and it cost about $530 or so.

Was it "good"? It's GREAT compared to what I had on there - oxidized red/pink "paint" that was almost to metal.

Am I satisfied? Yes. It's fine for what I needed it for.

Will it last? I hope so. I had clear-coat put on and I'm trying to keep it waxed. How much would a good paint job for my mazda miata cost?
It all depends on how much you want to spend, Do you want a "mom and pop" body shop to do it or do you want a good professional finish. It also depends on the condition of your vehicle's body and the prep work that has to be done to your vehicle body prior to painting. The color of paint you want to use also has an effect on price. (red colors are the most expensive) No one on here will be able to give you a estimate or where to take it. Some of that research can only be done by you.How much would a good paint job for my mazda miata cost?
600-1000 bucks go to different places and look at the other painted cars to see what kind of work they do if they want your business and have nothing to hide it shouldnt be a prob.

One of the best sites to check out information on this (IMHO) is "Grassroot Motorsports", they have done several project Miata's and back issues can provide a wealth of knowledge about what worked for them, much of the information on these project cars is on line.

Another place to check is with flying Miata, the online dyno charts on upgrades is useful in making the final choice.

What do you think the advantages/disadvantages would be in buying a Mazda Miata or a convertible in general?

This is disregarding costs. I'm thinking or buying one, and I'm interested to know if anyone has ever driven the car before or has had any inauspicious experiences with convertible cars in general. This particular model is the MX-5What do you think the advantages/disadvantages would be in buying a Mazda Miata or a convertible in general?
Well, the MX-5 is the Miata. It's just the name of the car. Your models or time levels are Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

First, the Mazda Miata is the best selling 2 seat roadster of all time, of any brand of car ever made....ever. A few reasons for this are that they are fun to drive, they are engineered with the DRIVER in mind, not how it looks, but rather how it functions and how it makes driving a fun experience.

There are more Mazda's being road raced on any given weekend than any other make of car in the world. Go drive one at your local Mazda dealer and you wont be disappointed!

    Second, convertibles are a blast!

What is the best rim size to get for my 95鈥?Mazda miata?

im looking for more performance, what rim size is best for this car? What is the best rim size to get for my 95鈥?Mazda miata?
It is not just a matter of rim size, but offset and wheel weight.

Both of these affect handling. Dollar wise the best ones are the polished ones off of the 5th anniversary models (15").

But please realize that unless you are experiencing problems with loss of adhesion in a turn, there is no reason to up-grade. Until your skill level and or comfort level in this car is such that you need what the lower tire profile will offer, save your money and take a driving school (Skip Barbour ? comes to mind, but there are other see link).

I drive 90 Mata's up here in the mountains of WV on 14" stock width tires, and while there are other cars here that should be quicker through the turns, the drivers lack either the confidence to keep up or the skill. So while I know that a lower profile tire would help me keep the advantage, it is not worth the expense.

But after doing a lot of research and talking to other drivers who have tried other rim sizes, a 15" rim would be my choice. But when shopping I would have to keep in mind wheel weight. This is because unsprung weight needs to be kept low in-order to keep the steering light. So look for the lightest tire and rim combination that will work. What is the best rim size to get for my 95鈥?Mazda miata?
For performance your best bet is to go with a 15" wheel at least 7" wide. An 8" wide 15 may be your optimum size for performance, that wide of a wheel will allow you to stretch your tire a bit which increases steering response and also enhances grip. Look at some of the max performance tires in 205/50R15 or 225/45R15 (you'll find the best selection of max performance tires for reasonable prices in the 15" rim size).

Check out 949Racing (www.949Racing.com). They make the 6UL in a 15x8, it's light and strong for a wheel that size and has the proper offset to work on your car. There is info on their site as to which wheels work with what tire sizes for various years of Miatas too.

Can you make an Automatic Transmission to a Manuel in a 1990 Miata?

How hard would it be, and what does it entail? Can you make an Automatic Transmission to a Manuel in a 1990 Miata?
    It can be done.

You need the clutch pedal, hanger, master and slave cylinders, hydraulic lines, transmission, flywheel pressure plate, clutch plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing. I believe all the crank shafts are drilled for the pilot bearing. The ECM is different and the interlocks will have to be rewired. A new center console would be nice, but not required for the conversion to work. Well at least a different boot on the shifter.

Also I have heard (but not confirmed) that the cams are different. The automatic cam reportedly is more of a torque cam then the manual one and pays the price at the top end.

But with 90 Miata's going for less then three grand, it would hardly seem worth the effort to do the conversion, because by the time you get all the parts and install them you in many cases will be over that figure.
you would have to remove the automatic trans, remove the flex plate, and replace with a flywheel and a manual trans. you would then probably have to customize the floorboard and possibly the center console. rough estimate of parts and labor: possibly 3k...this may rival the cost of buying a 1990 manual miataCan you make an Automatic Transmission to a Manuel in a 1990 Miata?
Have to change the transmission, linkage and add a peddle assembly. If you get parts from a wrecking yard it may cost you $1,000 if you do the work yourself.
It would be cheaper and a lot easier to just sell your old Miata and buy a different Miata with manual transmission.

LoL Manuel UribeCan you make an Automatic Transmission to a Manuel in a 1990 Miata?
Gary doesn't know what he's talking about. there is no way you can buy the parts for under 2000

What is the difference between a Mazda Miata 5 SPD and a 6 SPD?

In laymans terms (I'm a girl)...What is the difference? I can't seem to find that answer online. What is the difference between a Mazda Miata 5 SPD and a 6 SPD?
Simple, 5 speed usually means it has a manual transmission, or stick shift if you will. It basically means the car has 5 gears that you shift through, 5th gear being your cruising gear. 6 speed is the same thing, just with 6 gears instead of 5. Personally, I'd go with the 6 speed. But if you don't know how to drive a stick, you can either learn, or you might want to consider going with an automatic transmission car. I can let you know more if you like, but I think I answered your question to the extent you wanted me to :)
The first difference is obvious, five is more then six.

But here are the gear rato's:

    1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th

    5MT 3.136 1.888 1.330 1.000 0.814

    6MT 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.257 1.000 0.843

These are for a Miata, other cars are different. Now there is another place the 6 spd and 5 spd are different, and that is in the differential gears. Some years have a 3.909 while others a 4.1 on the 6 spd while the 5 spd has a 4.3 (which is better for off the line).

The reason for more gears for the Miata is to stay in the power band across more of speeds the car can obtain. This also yields better MPG in some speed ranges. So the Miata 6 spd is a close ratio transmission. What is the difference between a Mazda Miata 5 SPD and a 6 SPD?
um im pretty sure the torque will e higher in the 6 speed but i could be wrong and the six speed you will be able to change gears more often which could be... in the 5 speed the engen is smaller or what ever but the main difrence is that in the 6 speed you will b swiching the gears more often than in the 5 speed and may have more torque but not sure about the torque part
it could be a few things. Some cars have a 5 speed automatic, 5 speed manual, or 6 speed manual. in lay mans terms the 6 speed will give you better gas mileage than the five. it has a lower overdrive which means the engine turns less revs per minute which means less gas. What is the difference between a Mazda Miata 5 SPD and a 6 SPD?
    A 5 SPD = a 5-speed manual, as in, there are 5 forward gears.

    A 6 SPD = a 6-speed manual, as in, there are 6 forward gears.
the question is, do you know how to drive stick shift? Seeing that you don't know what those two meant, I would think you wouldn't know how to drive it.

  • License plate on the side of the bumper on a 1995 Mazda Miata?

How could I do this? Do I need any special brackets or can it just be drilled into the bumper?License plate on the side of the bumper on a 1995 Mazda Miata?
Yes. but drilling is not the preferred method and the nose is thin plastic and it may work loose. A better solution is a special bracket, either home made or bought. Like the one/s from Miata Mania (http://www.miatamania.com/Shop/ViewProdu鈥?/a> They have other styles and they can be found at other Miata specialist.License plate on the side of the bumper on a 1995 Mazda Miata?
Not every car comes equipped with pre-drilled holes in the front bumper, which makes it a bit tricky to attach a license plate. Some drivers even prefer to leave the front bumpers of their cars free of any license plates. There are some states, however, that require license plates installed on the front bumpers of all vehicles. This doesn't necessitate drilling holes to attach a license plate; actually, it is relatively simple to attach a license plate to the front bumper--all you need is a no-holes license plate bracket kit, available from your car manufacturer.

    1.

    Step 1

Expose the tow hook mounting point by removing the cap. This is usually found on the passenger's side of the front bumper. Use a flat-head screwdriver or a removal tool, if included in the kit. Be sure to keep the cap in a place safe, such as the glove compartment, in case you would like to reinstall it later.

    2.

    Step 2

Attach the no-hole adapter bolt to the tow hook by inserting the bolt and using the included wrench to tighten it in place.

    3.

    Step 3

Attach the license plate bracket to the bolt, then use the lock washer to tighten the bracket in place. Be sure that the license plate bracket is level before tightening the lock washer.

    4.

    Step 4

Determine the height that you would like the plate to be on the bumper and then attach the Optional License Plate Height Adjustment bracket to the already fastened bracket, using the washers and lock nuts included in the kit. Be sure that you attach these brackets at identical heights on the left and right sides of the main bracket.

    5.

    Step 5

Attach your license plate to the bracket, using the screws, washers, nuts and wrenches included in the installation kit. Note that for many kits you may need to bend the bracket and plate slightly in order for the plate to sit flat.

When you sit in a miata, what is the tallest you can be and still be comfortable in it?

By comfortable I mean not hitting your head on the ceiling and being able to sit in it for long periods of time. When you sit in a miata, what is the tallest you can be and still be comfortable in it?
Depending on the year model there are some slight differences. (I own a 92): I think they have plenty of height, but the width may be the question for some. I am 6'1" and 180lbs. I have no problems fitting whatsoever. I also take mine to track events and autocross, which means I am wearing a helmet, and no issues with hitting the roof.

The main difference in the size will be more on the passenger side. Depending on year, the ECU, which is the brain of the car, is mounted under the passenger side footwell. This does limit leg space on the passenger side. Once Mazda figured that out (1994 and up), they made a change and moved the ECU to a different spot.

The Miata is a "Cult" kind of car....either you absolutely love it, or you absolutely hate it. I absolutley love mine, and I have driven it for about 190,000 miles....still running great. My wife lived in Baton Rouge, and I lived in Austin TX before we were married. I had no problems driving for 6hrs straight in my car. I had the top down, dog was riding along with me and he enjoyed it as well. He fit perfectly underneath my roll bar on the back shelf.

I think it has plenty of room, unless you hate the car. My wife hates my car. She says she "Doesn't fit". My wife is 4'10" and is 97lbs...I could fit her in my pocket.

I've never had anyone who truly wanted to enjoy the "Pure Driving" experience say they didnt fit in the car.
Can't answer that directly but at 6'3"...NO WAY.When you sit in a miata, what is the tallest you can be and still be comfortable in it?
I owned a Miata when they first came out and I'm 6'1" I used it for business, travelled 35M per year and was always comfortable even after long stretches of freeway driving. I wasn't real fond of stop and go driving in the cities or for short stops where I had to get in and out of the car. It's a GREAT car; I did have to replace the clutch, other than that no mechanical problems.

    Good luck.
I am 6'3 and when they first came out I worked at a Mazda dealership and had no problems getting in and out but I only went on test drives so didn't get to experience long distanceWhen you sit in a miata, what is the tallest you can be and still be comfortable in it?
As a driver, my boyfriend (6'1'' and about 250 lbs) fits OK, but he'd rather have the headroom provided with the top down. As a passenger, he can barely fit. I'm 5'3'' and 115 lbs and that car fits me like a glove. I'm loaning it out to a friend who's about 5'11'' and about 250 and he fits in it just fine, and drives it for hours.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it depends on you, personally. Give one a test drive, and find out! :)

How to ajust a clutch on a 1990 Mazda Miata?

I gave my miata to my father 6 years ago, the clutch needs adjusting, anybody know how%26gt;? can it be done through the pedal? thanks in advance! LorinHow to ajust a clutch on a 1990 Mazda Miata?
The clutch is self adjusting. It it will not disengage the clutch then the system is leaking. Which is either in the master and/or the slave. It could also be a failed line (there is a hose in the system that fails).

So bleed the system and pump it up, that is all the adjustment there is!

If the clutch will not engage suspect that the clutch is gone. I just went ahead and replaced the complete set up with a ten pound flywheel off e-bay on one of my 90 Miata's last year for less then a stock set up.

Owner of 90 Miata's for over ten years. How to ajust a clutch on a 1990 Mazda Miata?
There can be some adjustment in the free play between the pedal and the master cylinder.. typically if you look up underneath the pedal you will see a rod going into the firewall(into the master cyl.) This rod can usually be turned to adjust the space between the pedal and its contact with the cylinder

in other words the amount of free play the clutch pedal has... you could also try bleeding the master to make sure it does not have any air in it the same way you would bleed the brakes..

Is this 1991 Mazda Miata worth the money?

I am planning to buy a 1991 Mazda Miata with 115 K miles on it for about $1100. It has a 5 speed manual transmission. The radiator and engine valves were recently replaced. The AC needs to be replaced. The car drives good and paint is ok.

Please guide me!!!!Is this 1991 Mazda Miata worth the money?
you really should check the following things.

ask the current owner why the car needed both a new radiator and valves. If he replies that the radiator went bad and the car overheated then you might want to take it to a mechanic and have a compression test done. This will tell you if the rings were compromised. Worn and leaking rings are costly to replace.

Ask the owner to provide you the maintenance records, showing who did the repairs to the engine. Ask if there are any warranties on the repairs that have been done and if it extends to the new owner of the car.

the A/C might be costly to replace as well. The A/C compressor more than likely is the older version and would need to be replaced to accept the newer HCFC refrigerant.

If the car has 115,000 mile I would also ask about the transmission, and see if the clutch has ever been replaced. If not that too will soon need attention.

With all that done when the car is in the mechanics shop, ask the mechanic to look at the front and rear brakes and suspension. The brakes and suspension parts can also get pretty costly if they are nearing the end of there life cycle.

If you would like a super complete list of things for the mechanic to look at please feel free to ask me and I can make one up for you and e-mail to you.

    Good Luck.
$1100 doesn't seem bad if it looks %26amp; runs okay.Is this 1991 Mazda Miata worth the money?
don't get much for $1100 sounds like a good deal to me
$1100 for that kind of mileage on the engine is pretty good. Make sure the top is not all shredded though. Is this 1991 Mazda Miata worth the money?
That is a good price. I bought my 1991 Miata 2 years ago, it had about 91,000 miles and I paid $1,700.00
This sounds too good to be true. Stay away. A 1997 Miata was bought by a friend for 5000.00 with 115,000 miles and is running good as a weekend convertible. No more.
1100 for a clear titled Miata is a good deal.

I have seen more then that asked for total wrecks.

The deal gets better if you have mechanical skills and can read.

I know the reading part seems sarcastic, but Miata's suffer from "Terminal Mechanic" . Many owners try to do the maintenance on them with out a manual and as a result botched the job. Repairing the mis-repaired items can be a night mare.
$1100 is very low for a miata, among the lowest Ive seen, and I buy and sell cars frequently online.

I would drive it and as long as it drives and shifts smoothly, go ahead and get it.

at $1100 you cant get hurt.
1100 is cheap for a mazda miata. but considering the a/c does not work then the price may just be right. find out why the radiator and engine valves were replaced and take a mechanic to check for accidents and other repairs. i hear carfax gives pretty good history reports. you may want to check it out and factor those into your desicion making
not a bad price those are fun little cars. in fair shape on kelley blue book it is worth 1600. so that is about right.

use Simple Green and water with a 1:5 Ratio.. it does a good job of cleaning.. also use a microfiber towel to wash it with

How does a Mazda miata handle and drive?

They are affordable, fun to drive and handle very well... but they are also rather underpowered, and the 2 seater, rear wheel drive platform makes them less useful and versatile than cars in the 'hot hatch' category, like the Mazda Speed 3 or Subaru WRX [this gay man's personal pick].How does a Mazda miata handle and drive?
What I love is how when you're asking the question, it gives you the option to choose which category to post it in if Y! Answers might be putting it in the wrong category by default, so you had the chance to put it in the right category on your own. As for answering your car question, I have no clue - I haven't driven a Miata.

What the best bang for your buck for a 2000 Miata: Turbocharger, Supercharger, or LS v8 upgrade?

I want to do a upgrade for racing my miata now that I have it paid off. which of these options is the best for drag racing, but wont kill my bank account. What the best bang for your buck for a 2000 Miata: Turbocharger, Supercharger, or LS v8 upgrade?
Stacy David who host a car show called GEARZ. Put a FORD small block into a Miata. It made a very quick and agile car. You can check it out at gearztv.com.

It depends on the amount of money and what how fast you want to go.

I have heard the Miata engines are very reliable. A turbo or supercharger is fairly straight forward and will give you instant and constant power. Both have advantages and drawbacks.

An LS engine swap would be very cool. You will also have a very good platform which to build on. I would say that the cost of doing the LS swap with a trans would be in the neighborhood of about, $3,000 to $4,000. That would include the engine and trans, and all of the other stuff to complete the swap. You should be able to get an engine and trans for around $1,500 to $2,000. You can pay less but it will be more labor and rebuild. You will probably need a new oil pan and headers. You will have to modify you fuel tank and will have to get the wiring harness modified also. I did an LS swap into my 69 el Camino. It is a 5.3 out of a 2002 Silverado with a 4L60E. What a difference.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun doing it.

BillWhat the best bang for your buck for a 2000 Miata: Turbocharger, Supercharger, or LS v8 upgrade?
check with mazda dealers, they can offer you some good things on after market stuff,if not they can tell you where to look.turbo's are good for making power with out using the engine, the supercharger is good too the only draw back is you have to use power from the engineWhat the best bang for your buck for a 2000 Miata: Turbocharger, Supercharger, or LS v8 upgrade?
I don't think the V8 route would be the way to go in a street vehicle. It would end up being a nose-heavy tire smoking beast. The only way to correct it would be some major engine setback. I would probably go with a belt driven super charger. They don't have the lag like a turbo does.
    go with the LS V8.

  • Can my baby sit in the passenger seat in my 93 Miata?

I wanna take my 2 month old baby to another city, but I drive a Miata, which is a 2-seater convertible.

I'm thinking if she can sit in the passenger seat without a baby car seat.

and do you guys think i should leave the convertible top down or up?Can my baby sit in the passenger seat in my 93 Miata?
Put the car seat in the front seat. I don't think you can get a ticket for babies in the front of a 2 seater car. A 2 month old can barely hold up their head so what makes you think you can put him/her in the seat with no car seat. I think you should keep the top up because to much wind takes away their breath and makes it hard for them to breathe.
go for it, be sure to drive past a few staties too!Can my baby sit in the passenger seat in my 93 Miata?
You should go to jail for even joking about that.
I know that you are not serious about this question, but I will humor you.

No, you cannot put your 2 month old in the passenger side your miata without a car seat, and even if you decide to do this (which is against the law), you have to leave the convertible top up!Can my baby sit in the passenger seat in my 93 Miata?
No, Britney, she can't. There are laws against that. Go back to rehab. Guess K-Fed will get custody of the kids.
    you have to be kidding.

that is the stupidest thing i have ever read in my life. you could go to jail if pulled over like that.

please dont tell me you are serious.
thanks for the two points just to tell you that you need to find better things to do
your baby will hurl all over your car...
Lol the part that made me laugh was when you asked if you should leave the top down or up. Definitely down, that way if you get into an accident at least the baby may have a chance to fly out and land on a soft patch of grass.
Not at all funny. Grow up.
WOW! You really don't need to be a father. Wanting to take your baby in the front seat. If that's not bad enough, you want to take her without the car seat. This must be a joke.
This has to be another stupid question right???

Why wouldnt you sell that car and buy an appropriate car when you were expecting your baby?

You need a car seat and in the back of your car!!

If you have to top down the baby will take in too much air and die!

I hope this is a joke.

What year RX7 Air Flow Meter can I use on my Turbo 91 Miata?

I hear/read that I can improve intake volume by "upgrading" to an RX7 Air Flow Meter but I can barely find a subject matter expert online. Can you lead me in the right direction by shooting me a link? What year RX7 Air Flow Meter can I use on my Turbo 91 Miata?
You will be looking for the 87-88 YR AFM. This will only net you about 5 HP over 6k rpm's. You will also need to "Tune" it which entails openeing the AFM, loosening a screw and turning the gear a few clicks. The RX7 AFM will make your car run rich, so changing this gear position will help that. In the ned, you will have a larger volume of air.

There are plenty of "free" hp upgrades, search miata.net and type free horsepower int he search bar.

    %26lt;EDIT%26gt;

Just noticed you have a turbo. If you have a piggyback ecu controller, your best bet will be to datalog your AFM and remove it entirely.

Search these links below. What year RX7 Air Flow Meter can I use on my Turbo 91 Miata?
Because you are running a turbo, I doubt that an upgrade will help. The turbo will overcome the intake restriction. As the other writer said the bigger AFM only helps above 6 grand and at that point you are at close to or have hit max boost anyway.

What you need to worry about is the low end. A set of cams from an automatic could help there.

How fast is the Flying Miata Turbo kit?

How fast can you make a 94 miata with the FM1 kit? 0-60 1/4 etc

What about if you add a CAI and dual exhaust? How fast is the Flying Miata Turbo kit?
The fastest Miata i've seen was doing about 4.5 seconds 0-60, no idea how it did it though. i think it was supercharged. How fast is the Flying Miata Turbo kit?
The Miata with a FM1 kit will very likely do under 6second 0-60 and probably 14's in qt/mile. It all depends on the tune and other performance and weight modifications.

Now with the CAI, and dual exhaust you will not see much improvement. A dual exhaust is absolutely unnecessary, unless u are turbo'd. If anything the listed mods will decrease your low-mid responsiveness, while adding to the top end slightly.

The FM kit is #1, but requires a lot of work and money to get right. A basic NA tune may be fun, but you will need to do a host of other mods to realize its potential. How fast is the Flying Miata Turbo kit?
If you look, they have dyno sheets in the tech section. While they may not have the exact set up you are talking about is should give you a good idea.

Over all speed will not be increased due to the rev limiter. For a higher top end some other modifications will have to be made. Such as re-gearing the differential (hurts low end) or ECM changes (as well as pulley changes to protect the pumps and alternator).

Check out the site for Turbo Miata's and Miata net.

Correctly set up (a dyno-tune is highly recommended) you will be able to get performance that rivals some very high priced sports cars. Also you may need to buy a truck load full of Fruit of the Looms for spares.

1994 miata starts the immediately then quits?

My 1994 Mazda Miata has always started with no problems until this morning. It started for a brief second and promptliy dies. Not a sputtering die but an instant die situation.

    Battery and lights work fine

There is spark from the coil

    Gas tank is full

Any ideas?1994 miata starts the immediately then quits?
Sounds like your Miata is not getting enough fuel to keep running. You might want to try replacing the fuel filter on your 94 and see if this corrects the problem. If that doesn't work you gonna need to see if the fuel pump itself is failing.
Have the fuel pump checked. Probably doesnt have enough pressure to keep the vehicle running.1994 miata starts the immediately then quits?
the tank may be full but if it cant get to the engine then it wont run for long. it could be as simple as buying a cheap little bottle of fuel system cleaner if and hard as changing the fuel pump filter and injrctors. i recommend start with the cheaper of the 2 first and then move on from there good luck
it could be the fuel injectors or it can be you alternator if you can take/pull it in to a Mazda dealer ship and have them check it out (don't go to a mechanic because it will take a very long time and they charge more)good luck1994 miata starts the immediately then quits?
when the fuel pump is bad it sputters until your engine absorb all fuel left on the lines then die so its not the fuel pump like the others guys says..... i dont know why those people above answer they dont (most) know nothing about mechanic so i guess they fell happy guessing or something like that

my friend you have one of two problems, the most comom problem is something related to electrical system

check your ignition system, cap, cables, spark plugs, cap rotor and the ignition itself

also an engine without ground can lead you to a sudden shut off

and the second one.... maybe your timming belt is out... some cars sometimes ran on a few timming belt teeths until they finally broken and engine spinns freely and die

and last im 95% sure is not the fuel pump but you can inspect it any way, unplug the line camming from your filter and start the car is a heavy spray came from it your pump is ok
Check your plug wires first. They go down through the valve cover and are a hard plastic. The Miata had problems with the spark arching through and grounding. This usually starts with rough running. however.

Second. The fuel pump gets two signals. The first is from the starter. Once the car starts, the fuel pump gets its signal from the air flow sensor. I think it goes through a relay. If it always starts then dies, this could be the problem. If it only starts once in a while, this is not it.

The person who responded that opening the throttle worked for him probably has a bad check valve in his fuel pump. The pump is supposed to hold pressure in the system. If the check valve is bad, the pressure bleeds off and there is no fuel pressure for a cold start. Then he must restart several times until the pressure builds up again. Usually this only happens on the first start of the day.
    He Duffas:

Ditch the little four and go with a V6 you will love the power you get. My 94 has a 3.0 ford with a automatic. All i had to do was to change the motor mounts and transmission. After all Ford builds Mazda so it is a natural.
My Miata (90) has been suffering the same thing. But if I start it in the full throttle position it will keep running. After a few minutes it will run like it is supposed to. I think that the hot weather has caused a similar condition as "vapor lock".

Other wise it is most likely the air flow sensor that has failed. This causes the fuel pump to shut down. Also because my Miata's may sit for months at a time, I have had to tweak the throttle position reed switched so that they will make contact.

There is also the limited possibility that some thing has blocked the port in the AFS and it is reading no airflow. Cleaning a AFS with the wrong thing can cause damage to the unit. I use WD40 and it has not removed any coatings that I know of (yet).
maybe there's a problem with the engine.
