Fuel pump works when tested by jumping diagnostic connector terminals. The circuit opening relay has been replaced and the EFI main relay appears good. Car will start but only idle no matter how much pedal you give it. Where should I start? My 1992 Miata will only idle no matter how far the throttle is open, why?
Remove air filter and see if it works right then, - possibly it is so plugged it will only let in enough air to idle --(computer sensing this and keeping "mixture right" for best emmissions!
look at "rocker" where linkage from gas pedal hooks on "valve body" on induction system, -- have somebody work the pedal and see if it is moving-- remove air cleaner, or connecting hose so you can look inside valve body and see if the "throttle plate" is moving!-- Since the engine will only speed up according to how much air is let into induction system, -- which computer then meteres out fuel in proper proportions to make engine run effiecently!
Start with the pedal linkage. It sounds like something is broken between the throttle and engine. My 1992 Miata will only idle no matter how far the throttle is open, why?
you m=need to check your linkage,, or the cable at the throttle body or carb or whatever you got, chances are the cable popped off and is no longer working, id start there
Is the throttle cable broke?
Is it connected?
The throttle position sensor may be miss aligned.
The throttle position sensor is not that complicated. It has basically 3 positions- idle, run and full throttle. If the switch is not working (indication idle at all times) it could be the problem. I have tweaked mine to correct it, but I never had the problem you describe even when not working right.
Maybe the MAF, but never seen it or heard of this part failing.
Good luck.My 1992 Miata will only idle no matter how far the throttle is open, why?
will the car idle if you dont touch the gas???
You may a fuel pressure issue. Or even something as simple as a cloggeed fuel filter. Even though your pump is coming on, doesnt mean you have good pressure.
If you have a fuel pressure tester, do that. But then again if you had one of those, you probably already knew this... :-)
NEED MORE INFORMATION!
Does the car idle? Is it a shaky idle? If so, sounds more like a vacuum leak then anything else. Open the hood, start it and listen for a hissing sound.
What other symptoms do you have, did this start all of the sudden? gradually loosing power?
Remove the air intake duct and see if the throttle plate actually moves when your friend presses down on the accelerator pedal. Maybe the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) connected to the throttle shaft isn't telling the computer the throttle plate is rotating.
THERE IS A CABLE THAT HOOKS ON THE GAS PEDAL, AND RUNS TO THE THROTTLE BODY, ON THE ENGINE, IT IS EITHER BROKE, OR DISCONNECTED. LOOK DOWN AT THE GAS PEDAL YOU WILL SEE A CABLE. SEE IF IS CONNECTED TO THE PEDAL, IF NOT JUST REHOOK IT. AND YOUR ON YOUR WAY.
