I am not so sure I can give you a straight answer on what production year the Mazda Miata gained the best gas mileage. Certainly you raise a good question that deserves at least a best guess. lol. Mileage is subject to how the car is driven and how well it is maintained, new or old. It really comes down to how knowledgeable the owner can be about his/her car to squeeze the most efficiency out of the power-train. The science is in building the car, the art is in who owns it and how they drive the car. You can imagine the many people who motocross, drift or go to the speedway. I am assuming your question is rooted in being a daily driver, one who is more settled behind the wheel than say, a teenager.
Well I think you have your answer. The car is good for 25-35 mpg city highway estimates from owners supports this notion. If you were to get better miles than advertised, it is because the car loves you back. Most people who own a Mazda Mx5 weather built in 1989 or to the present fall in love with its timeless execution of being a snug and simple 2 seater that doesn't demand to much from their pocket to travel the next mile, with a smile. Perhaps someday, I will purchase a Mazda Mx5.

I am sorry, but newest is not always better. When talking MPG for sure.
The older Miata's have smaller engines and less weight. My 90 gets about 28 around town and almost 35 on the high way. Which much better then the new ones.
So the older the better in this case!
It is a pity, the old MG's and TR4's could get 35 to 45 MPG and that was with out all of the high tech junk on engines today.
The New SHO is so close to the new Miata on MPG rating that if I had the money to buy one, I would own one. It is a good thing for me that I can't. The old SHO with only 220 HP could scare the daylights out of you, what would 300+ HP do?Which year of the Mazda Miata gets the best gas mileage?
